One day John Yates told Matt Walsh he had bought a camera. Normally, Matt and John agree on the merits of most products - Klipsch Speakers, Steve Ritchie pinball, Atari products, etc. In this case, though, John's purchase conflicted with the results of Matt's digital camera research.

To this, John said his fateful sentence: "That's ok - if I decide I don't like it I'll just sell it on eBay and get most of my money out of it.".

This triggered a revelation. What if everyone - not just eBay pros - could do the same?

And so we looked closely at why such a small portion of people - even eBay users - sell.

When we looked at it through beginner's eyes we saw many barriers...

• You need to register on eBay with your credit card and set up a seller's account
• You need to register on PayPal with your bank account information
• You need to earn a decent feedback rating to attract buyers
• You need to be able to go through the complex eBay listing forms
• You need to find a free way to host large photos (important for a successful sale)
• You need to pay up-front costs just to get your item listed whether it sells or not
• You need to find and purchase your own shipping materials
• You need to understand the ins and outs of using the Post Office and/or UPS
• You need to visit the Post Office and/or a UPS Store to purchase your postage

With all these barriers, it is no wonder that few people sell.

So, Matt and John looked at each of these and realized they could build a site that could solve all of these problems.

After finding a spectacular group of angel investors, they quit their jobs, formed the company and built the site!
